This tiny corner of the world, surrounding the Salton Sea, reminds me so clearly and so vividly that every corner of the world is full of enormously creative beings, and most never find their way to art school. Creative expression is an unstoppable force built into the human DNA. Its expression can be as simple as a circle of rocks on a beach that takes five minutes to build, or as vast and complex as you can imagine. In Slab City you find projects that took decades to create. At Bombay Beach you find art pieces created on site by artists from around the world. They stand as a testament to the creative spirit. In the backroads of rural Imperial Valley you find incredible paintings in dilapidated warehouses, some of which could easily find themselves in more traditional art spaces.

Bombay Beach is a tiny community on the eastern shore of the Salton Sea, near Niland, California.
Back in the mid-century era, it was pitched as a beach resort town. Then the Salton Sea’s problems stacked up, the “resort” part faded, and what’s left is a mix of locals, artists, winter visitors, and curious road-trippers.
It’s not Disneyland. It’s not curated. It’s not trying to impress you.
It’s dusty, raw, and real, and that’s kind of the point.
It’s clear at first glance that our town is a unique place. But we believe that with an understanding of our town’s history, visitors to Bombay Beach will recognize how truly remarkable our community is.
A tiny, half-abandoned town in a neglected corner of the California desert seems like an unlikely hot spot for street theater, classical opera and large-scale public art. Yet Bombay Beach on the eastern shore of the Salton Sea has become a thriving outpost of renegade art and free expression.
